The french "Raffarin Law"

A law voted in on 19/12/2002 imposes an obligation on all swimming pool owners (with outdoor inground pools) to ensure the safety of all members of the public and their own families and guests with effect from 1 January 2004.

for homes with private submerged swimming pools in France :

I own a rented property with a pool in France. When do I need to comply with the new law?

Pools at rental properties must be protected by 1st May 2004 (or before their first rental)

What about other properties that are not rented out ?

All new pools must comply with the new law when they are built. Existing pools in private homes must be protected by 1st January 2006.

What is the penalty for breaking the law ?

The penalty for breaking this law is a € 45,000 fine.

How do I ensure that my property and pool will comply ?

The alarms are provided with a certificate which attests that the product complies with the French norm NF P 90-307
